How do you get the built-in microphone to work on the Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop?

i have a Dell Inspiron 1545 lap top and the built-in microphone won’t work. It won’t let me Skype or record any sound on the voice recorder thingy. I’m not a computer savy person so advice in plain English would be great. thank you all
