How to troubleshoot a laptop motherboard or CPU
After using your laptop for several months or years you can see its screen appears blank when you turn it on, or that it simply will not turn at all, which may indicate a dead motherboard or processor. While troubleshooting the parts of a laptop is a more difficult process than for a desktop, it can still be done with a standard set of tools in your kitchen or home office.
This is what you need:
Stationary screen
Additional power cable
Screwdriver
Canned air
1. Check your physical connections first to ensure that the problem is not with your wall outlet or power cable. Put the laptop in a separate socket and try a spare power cable to check if your laptop will turn on at all. Remove the battery from the laptop by pressing down on the battery release latch and pull it out. Wait a few minutes and plug it back in. Try to turn on the laptop again and see if it will then be turned on.
2. Shine a flashlight on the LCD screen and look for faint images when turned on, but there is no clear picture on the screen. If images appear weak, the back light bulb needs replacing. Remove the battery and then pull the rubber plugs out of the screen. Remove the screws under the rubber stoppers and then pulling out plastic piece below the screen. Remove the hinges holding the screen in place and pull it out. Remove any remaining bolts to fully remove the laptop screen. Pull out the metal or plastic tube holding back, bulb and replace it with a new one.
3. Connect a standard desktop monitor to the appropriate port on your laptop, such as a serial, DVI, S-Video or USB port. Power your laptop and check to see if an image is displayed on separate screens. Take the laptop to a repair center for its inverter board replaced if you can see an image in separate screen. Disconnecting external monitor if no image is displayed at all.
4. Take your notebook’s Toshiba satellite p300 battery. Remove the large plastic piece in between the keyboard and the top half of the screen by sliding a flat object such as a screwdriver head between its hinges and then pry it up and down. Disconnect the cable attached to the motherboard. Take all the screws holding the keyboard and the screen hinges into place and then pull them out. Check for any obvious damage to the internal components such as from a spilled liquid. Use canned air to spray out any dust or dirt that covers all parts.
5. Remove all the screws and pull out of parts such as hard disk and graphics card. Pull the motherboard. Set the motherboard down and set the external monitor directly into the appropriate port. Plug the power cord into the adapter and then press the power button on the motherboard. Waiting to see if the processor fan is turned on at all. Replacing the motherboard all together if the fan will not turn on.
6. Replace the processor if the fan turns on, but the laptop still will not show anything on the external display.
Tips:
Not all laptops have a port that can accept a remote HP g70 battery. If so, you must buy a converter cable to convert the desktop’s chord into a form that your laptop port could accept such a serial to USB converter.
Be very careful not to touch the processor or any of the metal parts on the motherboard while it is plugged into AC power cord that you can shock or damage to the motherboard via electrostatic shock.
