Laptop Screen Goes Black

Laptop screen goes black when I plug in my Charger.?
My laptop was working perfectly fine when one day the it was about to lose power to I plugged in my charger and the screen went black. The laptop was still on and I could just barely make out my desktop, icons, arrow etc… Now I have to charge my laptop while its off, use it and turn it off before it goes dead and charge again. Any ideas about whats wrong with it? Its a Dell Inspiron 1520 btw.
Have you tried turning up the brightness while the charger is plugged in?
Have you tried just the charger without the battery plugged in?
Is there a key combination you might have accidentally operated causing the issue?
Other possibilities are bad charger, bad battery, bad input jack, bad motherboard. Identifying which will be a process of elimination.
