What is the best laptop to buy as far as inexpensiveness and quality is concerned? What specs to look for?

Mac computers can’t be called competitively priced so they are out. Compac & HP seem to get the most complaints. Gateway & Dell are probably next up the ladder. Above these brands complaints drop. Gaming computers don’t come cheap so those are out. Lenova and Toshiba get a lot of good reviews.
So, I’d go with one of those two, that is in the range you want to spend, as a recommendation. I have had PCs since the early 80s and the only brand I have had more than one of without one being a disappointment was Toshiba. I have not had a Lenova. I or close friends have had bad experiences with the first four brands I mentioned.
To run Vista well you should have at least 2GB of memory. I went with 4GB because Windows 7 should be out soon to, hopefully, correct Vista complaints. MS has a habit of releasing new OS versions that require more memory to run well than the predecessor.
If you want the minimum cost short of used, you want a mini-laptop/netbook. Normally XP machines with 1GB or less of memory. Very small, very portable, very basic(no DVD), very inexpensive.
Past planning to have enough memory for OS updates, all current computers are adequate for normal usage. You know if you want to update from Vista. You know what else among web cams, DVD options, size, etc. that you want better than us. Someone might say get at least 15″ screen. I wanted smaller. Some want a net-book. I need more features.
Some beta tester sites are saying possibly as early as April for Windows 7. We’ll see on that.
